Diving the Gili Islands: Where Ocean Currents Create an Underwater Paradise

Ever wondered why diving around the Gili Islands feels like exploring a whole different world? Well, you’re actually diving in one of nature’s most remarkable underwater highways – the Lombok Strait!

Nature’s Underwater Highway

Imagine standing between two oceans – the Pacific on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. That’s exactly where we are! The Pacific Ocean sits about 30cm higher than the Indian Ocean, creating what we like to call an underwater waterfall. Pretty cool, right? This natural phenomenon creates some of the most nutrient-rich waters you’ll ever dive in.

Around 20% of the water flowing between these two mighty oceans squeezes through our local channel – the Lombok Strait. This creates perfect conditions for an incredible variety of marine life, from tiny nudibranchs to majestic manta rays.

A Tale of Two Oceans

But here’s where it gets even more interesting! Right through the middle of the Lombok Strait runs something called the Wallace Line – named after the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Think of it as nature’s very own fence, separating two completely different animal kingdoms. During the ice age, when sea levels dropped, this deep strait kept animals from crossing between Bali and Lombok, leading to completely different species evolving on each side!
