By Abigail Hayhurst
Heya! My name is Abigail Hayhurst, and I am a Canadian Wildlife Conservation Technician who recently finished her program at Gili Shark Conservation (GSC).
I have always had a passion for the ocean and everything related to marine life, and my love for it was amplified after joining the project in Gili Air. When you join, you are welcomed into the family immediately and are made to feel at home. The staff are incredible and are there to help you with anything you may need or answer any questions you may have. I have never experienced a more welcoming environment, and for that, I am so beyond grateful.

I have worked in marine conservation before, but have been focused on researching terrestrial and coastal species for the past few years. However, still having my heart set on returning to the ocean, I decided to venture off to Indonesia from Canada and join GSC after years of dreaming about joining the team. It was truly one of the best decisions I have ever made, and the experience exceeded all of my expectations. I had never felt so welcome and part of a family like I did at Gili Shark.
I not only had the chance to improve my underwater research skills, but I was also provided the opportunity to make friendships and connections that I am confident will last a lifetime. I didn’t think it was possible to fall deeper in love with the ocean, but this community has introduced me to another form of magic underwater.
You are given ample opportunity and time to understand the research methodologies and develop your confidence in completing underwater surveys and tasks. During my time at GSC, I was trained by a group of inspiring women. As someone who has been in the conservation industry for several years now, it is so empowering to see so many incredible women being given the opportunity to utilize and share their knowledge practically. I have endless amounts of admiration and respect for each of the women who trained me, and I am excited to know that they will continue to share their passion with many more like-minded, ocean-loving individuals. Through this, I know they will be able to continue making necessary changes in the marine environment! I hope to return one day to my family at Gili Shark Conservation. I will miss the island and the community so very much.
Until next time,
Abby :)
